Overdraft Protection

Q&As
Overdraft Privilege Service (ODP) - FOR CONSUMER ACCOUNTS ONLY
ATM and every day debit card transactions

Q. If I have Southwest Bank’s Overdraft Privilege Service, do I still need to opt-in to overdraft protection for my ATM and every day debit card transactions?

A. Yes. Your current Overdraft Privilege Service will not cover your every day debit card purchases and ATM transactions unless you choose to opt in. Your checks and recurring bill payments will continue to be covered as before.

Q. If I opt in for overdraft protection of my ATM and every day debit card transactions, will my debit card charges always go through?

A. No. Whether a transaction will be paid is discretionary and we reserve the right not to pay. Most overdrafts are paid but there is no guarantee. Our Overdraft Privilege Service may pay your occasional overdraft up to a limit of $800* for consumer accounts.

Q. Are there fees?

A. Yes. You will pay a $32 fee each time a check, in-person withdrawal, ATM withdrawal, debit card or other electronic items is presented for payment and you don’t have sufficient funds in your account. There is no fee if you have the service and don’t use it.

Q. If my account becomes overdrawn, how long am I allowed to repay or cover the overdraft?

A. We reserve the right to require you to pay your outstanding overdraft (negative) balance, including our fees, immediately or on demand.

Q. What about automatic debit card payments that I set up with a merchant?

A. Debit card purchases that are set up to bill automatically (like a gym membership) may continue to be authorized at our discretion even if you do not opt-in to receive our Debit Card Overdraft Privilege Service.

Q. If I choose to opt-out and not have my every day debit card purchases and ATM transactions covered, when will you stop paying these items?

A. If you choose to opt-out, we will stop paying your every day overdraft debit card items and ATM transactions as soon as we receive your opt out decision.

Q. What if I can’t decide or don’t want this service?

A. We’re happy to talk with you about options for managing your account. You may also want to consider our other methods of overdraft protection, such as a link to another checking or savings account, which may be less expensive than our standard ODP service.
